Spotify now allows unlimited free desktop streaming

Shortly after imbuing its tablet app with unlimited online streaming, Spotify has added the same capability to its desktop app as of Wednesday. The listening time limits have been lifted, and now ad-supported users can listen for an unlimited amount of time.

While tablets and mobile devices are still restricted to streaming user-made playlists, the desktop app now has unlimited streaming in general. Spotify writes that in the past, users were restricted to “some hours” per month once a six-month grace period had expired.

This move comes in contrast to one of Spotify’s biggest competitors, Rdio, which still limits users to a certain number of streams, for up to six months. Once that six-month period of ad-supported “Rdio Free” expires, Rdio users must pay up or go elsewhere.
